Middle School Rocket Club
Teacher: Pascal Biron
Day: Friday
Age/Grade levels: 6-8
What to expect:
Students will build rockets using non -metal materials to understand the dynamics of rocket flight. From straw rockets to solid fuel kits, students will explore different aspects of physics and engineering while applying their problem solving skills to achieve the perfect flight.
6th grade is the first step towards an ARC team which will allow students in grades 7 and 8 to compete against others at the state and national level.
Prototypes and kits will be designed and assembled at school while flights will take place at Fiesta Island on weekends under the supervision of DART, the San Diego rocketry association. There, students will be able to talk to other students involved in ARC teams and share their successes and learning events ( AKA catastrophic failures).
Parents will be responsible for their child during such launches ( transportation and supervision). The club instructor will remain on the launch site until all students have completed their flights.
The club will operate on Fridays for 1 hour and 30 minute sessions ( 3:45pm to 5:15pm).
Important Notice:
Safety being a number one priority in any form of rocketry, students will never manipulate any form of propellant at school. On the field, qualified students may be allowed to load the propellant on their rocket under supervision.Wood glue and shar tools will be commonly used, epoxy and super glue may be required for some projects.
Additional Costs and Financing:
MSRC will provide motors for one launch in 6th grade . Additional launches will need to be funded by the family ( expect $5 per launch).
Because the cost of an ARC team can be quite substantial, 6th grade kits will be purchased by parents. Expect to spend between $15-$30 per kit and a maximum of 3 kits per semester.
ARC ( national rocketry competition) running at a higher cost will be raising funds via a movie night ( date to be scheduled).
Grade Level:
Because this club is meant to participate in a more challenging ARC team, it is only open for enrollment to middle school students. A maximum of 10 students will be admitted for reasons of proper supervision during building time. An additional 2 students may be admitted if strongly motivated.
